Article is inaccurate. CHP did not arrest him, they gave him a ride. They found no w/w on him either. His unit never entered his status(simple phone call) therefore nothing could be done. Warrants issued days later.

I'm not surprised, really. The Cyberlynx interface that USCG uses to access NCIC, etc is junk. It provides very limited info and is not very user friendly.

Great article,

I carry a Springfield XDm .40 Cal daily and love it. I thought it was going to be too large to carry but I bought a "CrossBreed Super Tuck" and I can carry the full size XDm in shorts and a t-shirt daily.

USCG911 said, "I’d much rather have my BOs looking sharp and being prepared than worrying about carrying a badge. Pride comes from professionalism. And professionalism doesn’t come simply from being issued a piece of shiny metal."

I agree completely, and multi-agency respect (for at least your unit/team) stems from those fundamentals as well! Almost every new unit that I have been transferred to has left me building community relations with local/state/federal officers in that region. Mostly based on horrible previous interactions with one or two members of that particular unit. But that is the call of duty when you are with an agency that transfers you just as you build your contacts and a positive multi-agency work environment.

My big concern is in regards to LEOSA for the dedicated crime stoppers of the CG. One of the new versions of the MLEM's record of changes (did anyone else see this?) stated; "addition of COMDTs LEOSA policy"... but there was none. We may not get badges or a private issued off duty weapon (we don't need them); and our legal jurisdiction to uphold the law may end at the fence/shoreline, but we are the enforcement on the water which incidentally is the same water attached to the communities that all of us and our families live in. We are identified by our uniforms daily as federal law enforcement officers for the United States Coast Guard. THAT IDENTIFICATION does not stop at the fence/shoreline that our "jurisdiction" does. The people that we send to jail or detain and hand off to locals for violating laws might be a little ticked off at the current state of affairs that is they’re life. Who better to retaliate against than unarmed CG members on a stroll with the family? I have been on the other end of large scale narcotics busts and customs raids, and I have also had a fresh out of boot camp watch-stander give out my home address and phone number to “someone from the media who wanted to do an interview”. It’s not a good feeling, especially IF my agency is ordering me not to carry concealed off duty with my personal weapon. I’m not saying that this will definitely be COMDTs new LEOSA policy, but I’m not confident that he will uphold the virtues of the letter of this law. It is after all, agency discretion. But this in itself is the reason and the backbone of why this law was enacted in the first place… OFF DUTY officer safety. You might not remember the face of the people that you (directly/indirectly) sent to jail, but from experience; they will ALWAYS remember you.

Just a thought.
