Michigan SO Establishes Kayak Patrol Units
Good concept that will no doubt keep officers on the river for long patrols. If nothing else, guys on the kayaks will have an extra impact weapon with the paddle they carry.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office debuted a kayak patrol Thursday as plans push forward for a recreational water trail on the Clinton River. Sheriff Mark Hackel said the waterway isn’t highly traveled now. But an initiative is under way to change that. Officials are working on plans for the Blue Water Trail, a 30-mile route from Dequindre to Lake St. Clair. Officials hope the initiative will draw tourists to the Clinton River.
The six kayaks and trailer cost about $8,000 and were paid for with a combination of forfeiture funds and the Marine Safety Program reserves fundraiser. They will be manned by marine patrol officers and reserves. Hackel said launching the unit now helps familiarize officers with the dynamics of the river and how to aid first responders if incidents occur. Hackel said grants and foundation support are being sought to clear debris in the river. Municipalities along the route are expected to participate in future projects to enhance the banks and add parks and beachfront areas.
