CBP Reports Largest ‘meth’ Seizure at Sea Off San Diego: 144 pounds
A U.S. man returning from Mexican waters in his boat was arrested Sunday after federal officers found 144 pounds of methamphetamine and 10 pounds of cocaineonboard on Sunday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in a marine interdiction unit stopped the ’94 the Bayliner while patrolling around 12:30 p.m., a CBP officer said.
Officers from the unit boarded the boat just outside Mission Bay while others from a backup vessel stood by.
After escorting the private boat to the CBP dock, agents discovered a hidden compartment below.
The drugs discovered in the hold is valued at $3 million and is the largest methamphetamine seizure at sea by CBP off the San Diego coast, the CBP officer said.
The suspected smuggler was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with the Maritime Task Force.
Air and marine branches of CBP’s San Diego participate in the San Diego Maritime Unified Command which includes ICE, the Coast Guard, and other law enforcement agencies, patrolling coastal waters off San Diego and Orange counties.
