In a media release dated July 15 Operation Dry Water reported the effort was such a resounding success that the next one has already been scheduled for June 24-26, 2011.

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies, the press release noted, launched Operation Dry Water last year as a national weekend of BUI detection and enforcement. It is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol- and drug-related accidents and fatalities, and fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use on the water.

During last year’s inaugural operation 2,442 marine law enforcement officers made contact with 17,454 recreational vessels and issued 5,320 boating safety warnings, 283 BUI citations and 2,522 citations for other violations, the NASBLA reported.

This year the number of involved law enforcement officers rose to 2,708, with a corresponding rise in all other areas. 40,127 vessels were contacted, 7,522 boating safety warnings issued, 322 BUI citations issued, and 4,171 citations for other violations issued.
