Fleeing Felon Nabbed in Sausalito, CA Manhunt

Sausalito, CA harbormaster Janet Erickson was looking out her office window Thursday afternoon when she saw a man jump 10 feet off a nearby railing, land on her dock and bolt down the pier. Within minutes, the marina was swarmed by dozens of gun-wielding officers, soon followed by police boats, a helicopter and a search dog. “That’s what was scary – seeing the cops with the flak vests on and their hands on the trigger,” said Erickson, manager of the Pelican Harbour off Johnson Street. “OK, this is not a good one.” The running man turned out to be Isaias Gilberto Deleon – a wanted felon being sought on $235,000 in outstanding warrants for assault, witness intimidation, drug offenses, child cruelty and burglary, police said.

Gilberto, 21, had just been spotted by police in the passenger seat of a pickup truck on Bridgeway. As police moved to stop the truck, Gilberto jumped out and tried to escape on the waterfront, said police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. Gilberto vanished amid the boats along the marina’s north dock. Because he was considered armed and dangerous fugitive, police from through out Marin descended on the harbor by land, air and sea. The response included more than 30 officers and deputies from San Rafael, Sausalito, Novato and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, plus a Coast Guard boat, a Sausalito police boat and a helicopter from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

The Coast Guard crew found Gilberto hiding in the water next to a sailboat at 4:20 p.m., nearly two hours after he ran into the marina. Police hauled him in and sent him to Marin General Hospital for evaluation before booking him. The water temperature was estimated at 60 degrees. The driver of the pickup truck was also taken into custody, but it was unclear whether he would face potential charges. The driver was not named.

Authorities have been seeking Gilberto since last year on the warrants, which include a 2009 case of assault with a deadly weapon in San Rafael. Police said he was suspected of throwing a bottle from a second-floor balcony in the Canal neighborhood, striking a girl in the face. The incident was the second time in three months that a Gilberto sighting prompted a massive police search operation. In April, after he was seen driving in the Canal area, he raced from police, ditched the car and eluded a two-hour manhunt that included a helicopter and a dog.
