Drunken Chicago Boater Splashes Kids, Charged With BUI
A boater on the Chicago River was charged with boating under the influence of alcohol after being seen turning erratically downtown and splashing children fishing on the river bank, police said.
Bruce Calvetti, 50, of Northbrook, was operating his boat at a high rate of speed and turning in an unsafe manner about 2 p.m. Monday, police said. Fishermen called police to report him. Officers stopped him near 301 E. Illinois St. and noted he was slurring his speech. He told them he had been drinking but refused all alcohol sobriety tests and a breath test, police said.
“We definitely get some people driving boats drunk, operating under the influence. But it’s not very common during the day,” police Marine Unit Sgt. Joe Fitzgerald said. “It’s rare, but it does happen.”
